Elena Besser: What's cooking, it's your girl Elena Besser. I am a chef and tv host and today we’re talking about pomegranates.
[How to open a pomegranate]
I know that opening up a fresh pomegranate can seem very intimidating but i'm going to show you how to open a pomegranate in four easy steps using the water method.
Okay so the first thing you want to do is you want to take the pomegranate, turn it on its side and you're going to cut about a half inch from the crown just slice that right off like so and then you have these gorgeous sections revealed.

Okay so each pomegranate has about four to six sections and what you're going to want to do is take your knife and score down the center of those sections.

We are going to carefully pull the pomegranate apart over a bowl of water. Pry the arils loose with your thumbs like so and those arils are going to fall to the bottom of the bowl and the membrane is going to float to the top.

So I typically like using them on top of a salad I also love adding them to a yogurt parfait for a little extra tartness and they honestly taste super good in cocktails as well. So what we're going to do now is take a strainer and just strain out those large pieces so just take that water strain it on out and there you go.
